NDA Eligibility Criteria — What UPSC Checks

The UPSC NDA notification specifies several eligibility criteria that every candidate must satisfy. The calculator above checks these against your profile. Here is what each criterion means:

Age (16.5 to 19.5 Years)

Your age is measured on the course commencement date, not the exam date. For NDA I, the course starts on 1 January of the following year. For NDA II, the course starts on 1 July of the following year. You must be at least 16 years and 6 months old, and no more than 19 years and 6 months old, on that date. There is no age relaxation for any category (OBC, SC, ST, or otherwise).

Educational Qualification

Candidates must have passed 12th class (10+2) from a recognised board, or be appearing in the 12th class exam. Students currently in 11th class or below are not eligible to apply.

Wing-Specific Requirements

The NDA has three wings — Army, Navy, and Air Force. The educational requirements differ:

  • Army: Candidates from any stream (Science, Commerce, Arts) are eligible.
  • Navy: Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM) in 12th class are mandatory.
  • Air Force: Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM) in 12th class are mandatory.

Gender

Both male and female candidates are eligible to apply for NDA. Female candidates were allowed to apply following the Supreme Court of India order in August 2021. The same eligibility criteria apply to all candidates regardless of gender.

Marital Status

Only unmarried candidates are eligible. Candidates must remain unmarried throughout the duration of training at the National Defence Academy.

Nationality

Indian citizens are eligible. Subjects of Bhutan, subjects of Nepal, Tibetan refugees who came to India before 1 January 1962, and persons of Indian origin who have migrated from certain countries may also be eligible under specific conditions outlined in the UPSC notification.
